Digital X-Ray

Infertility evaluation is a systematic approach to diagnosing and understanding the underlying causes of infertility in individuals or couples trying to conceive. This evaluation typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examinations, and various tests. Here’s an overview of the key components involved in an infertility evaluation:

1. Medical History

  • Personal History: The healthcare provider will ask about menstrual cycles, previous pregnancies, miscarriages, and any past medical conditions.
  • Family History: Information about reproductive issues in family members may be relevant.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Discussion of lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, drug use, diet, and exercise habits.

2. Physical Examination

A thorough physical examination may include an assessment of reproductive organs, signs of hormonal imbalance, or other physical conditions that could affect fertility.

3. Laboratory Tests

  • Hormonal Testing: Blood tests may be conducted to check hormone levels, including follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol, progesterone, and thyroid hormones.
  • Semen Analysis: In men, a semen analysis evaluates sperm count, motility (movement), morphology (shape), and other factors to assess male fertility.

4. Imaging Studies

  • Ultrasound: Pelvic ultrasound may be used to examine the ovaries and uterus for abnormalities such as cysts, fibroids, or polyps.
  • Hysterosalpingography (HSG): This X-ray procedure uses a special dye injected into the uterus to visualize the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes, helping to identify blockages or abnormalities.
